As a former clerk to the Honorable Richard D. Cudahy, it is with great pride that I post the following:
The American Constitution Society for Law and Policy is pleased to announce its first annual Richard D. Cudahy Writing Competition on Regulatory and Administrative Law. Judge Cudahy’s work in these areas combines a keen grasp of legal doctrine, deep insight into the institutional forces that determine how doctrine is implemented, and an appreciation of the public impact of doctrinal and institutional choices, including the consequences for fundamental values such as fairness, participation, and transparency. This competition seeks to encourage and reward these qualities in the scholarship of others.
Overview: The Richard D. Cudahy Writing Competition on Regulatory and Administrative Law is open to a wide array of participants. Practicing lawyers, policymakers, academics, and law students all are encouraged to take part. The author of the winning paper will receive a cash prize of $3,000. Up to three top papers will receive special recognition at the ACS National Convention, on the ACS website, and potentially through other means agreed upon by the authors and ACS. Participants are encouraged to view this topic broadly; the ACS welcomes submissions on a variety of substantive areas. The panel of judges for the first annual award include:
- The Honorable Patricia M. Wald, Former Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, 1979-1999
- The Honorable David Hamilton, United States District Judge for the Southern District of Indiana, 1994-present
- Allison Zieve, Attorney, Public Citizen Litigation Group
- Professor Mariano-Florentino Cuellar, Professor of Law, Stanford Law School
- Professor Cynthia Farina, Professor of Law, Cornell University Law School
- Professor William D. Henderson, Professor of Law, Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington
The deadline for submission is February 15, 2008. For more information please see these
competition details.
ACS thanks Judge Cudahy’s clerks and staff for their generous support of the Richard D. Cudahy Writing Competition on Regulatory and Administrative Law. [Editorial note: Judge Cudahy has been on the bench since 1979. As a testament to the impact he has had on our lives, every former Cudahy clerk contributed to the endowment of this award.]
