On behalf of the ELS Blog, I would like to thank Dylan Steinberg and Jason Nance for agreeing to let us critique their work on the Internet for all the academy (and world) to see. One of the reasons I pursued this forum is because the Nance-Steinberg study focused on a very provocative, easy-to-understand topic and used a less common methodology than standard multivariate regression. I hope Dylan's and Jason's innovative work and our subsequent discussion stretched the curiosity and ambitions of our readers.

I really enjoyed this discussion as well!
I think that this "hot topic" concept is really worthy of further exploration. Undoubtedly, certain events exogenous to the literature are likely to propel specific topics to the forefront. However, there are a larger class of topics that are not intrinsically "hot" but become hot. A second generation or 2.0 version of this effort might be able to use something like Network Analysis to gain insight into the fascinating question of how cascades occur within the legal scholarship.
Best,
Dan
